History

Acton Cemetery was established in the mid 1860’s on a farm owned by John Leeper. The cemetery was managed by 5 trustees: Thomas J. McCollum, William McGregor, William A. Anderson, David Rabourn, and Thomas L.  Clark. The original 2 acres of land were divided into 65 lots which went around the pre-existing Leeper family graves. The oldest section of The Acton Cemetery is located just north of the cemetery office.  The oldest recorded burial is Warren B Stoops in 1845, John M. Leeper was buried in 1846.

The first lot sold in Acton Cemetery was issued to Joseph Fitzgerald on November 8th, 1866. During this time, lots held 4 graves each and sold for around $21 – $28 each.

In 1908, the cemetery was reorganized and association members began looking to expand the cemetery’s land. In 1913, the cemetery was expanded to the west after cemetery directors purchased land from A.H. Plymate. In 1922, 1.75 acres were added to the South, these lots selling for $60 each.
